MYSTERY surrounds the death of a woman whose body was found in her Box Hill South home, with police refusing to rule out if she has met with foul play.

Homicide detectives scoured the Canterbury Rd home last night where the victim, believed to be aged in her 50 or 60s, was found by a family member on Tuesday morning.

It is understood the body had been in the house for some time, possibly weeks.

Neighbours told the Herald Sun a woman lived at the property alone, with some saying they thought she had moved back to China.

It is understood the woman had a daughter aged in her 20s.

Eva Wu, who lives next door to the one-storey Canterbury Rd home, said the woman was “a friendly lady”.

“She lived there alone, she told us she was divorced,” she said.

“She had two little dogs she used to walk and we would always wave hello.”

Ms Wu added: “No lights were on and her car hasn’t moved in about three weeks.”

A red Toyota Corolla was parked in the driveway as homicide detectives collected evidence from inside the home.

The home’s front yard was unkempt, the lawn and bushes overgrown.

Detectives could be seen photographing several rooms inside the house, with crime tape blocking off the footpath.

Neighbour Mario, who did not want his surname published, said he often saw the woman walking her dogs.

“We never really spoke but she seemed nice,” he said.

Mario said he had “a tear in his eye” when he heard the news.

“It’s just really sad someone could be lying there for weeks without anyone knowing,” he said.

Another neighbour, Steve Hook, said he was “rattled”, telling 7 News: “It’s very distressing ... to find out that someone next door has come to grief. She was a very lovely lady.”

The property belongs to a man and woman aged in their 50s, who purchased the property in 2006.

They run a nearby Chinese medicine and acupuncture clinic.

Police said they were yet to confirm the woman’s identity and notify next-of-kin.

“The exact circumstances around the woman’s death are yet to be established and the investigation is ongoing,” Victoria Police spokeswoman Belinda Batty said.

Police say a post-mortem will be conducted.
