Scores of hungry diners flocked to a popular Glen Waverley eatery as politicians and traders’ representatives urged people to support Chinese restaurants, crippled by a drop in trade due to coronavirus fears.

Loyal fans returned to House of Delight which reopened on Friday after being closed for two weeks.

The business voluntarily shut its doors after it was revealed a diner on Australia Day had been infected with coronavirus.

The patron didn’t know he had the virus at the time.

Staff put themselves in isolation and the restaurant was disinfected despite Victoria’s chief health officer Brett Sutton stressing it was safe.

They were joined by members of the Glen Waverley Traders’ Association, Monash Council and politicians who united in encouraging people to get out and support the restaurant trade.

Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said it was safe to eat at Chinese restaurants.

“There is lots of misinformation spreading on social media and that is contributing to discrimination,” she said.

“I want to reassure the community that there is no risk in visiting these restaurants.”

Mt Waverley state Labor MP Matt Fregon said there was no reason for people to stay at home.

HILLS BUSINESS’ TOURISM DECLINE

MONASH TEEN’S RAPID CRICKET RISE

Glen Waverley Traders Association president Christo Christophidis said Monash businesses and staff abided health and hygiene standards.

“It’s actually OK to go out. We’re thriving and always hungry to show that we’re ready to serve the community,” he said.

The Monash Leader reported last week the much-loved Chinese New Year tradition of the salad toss was going ahead at The Glen despite fears of the spread of coronavirus.

Mayor Stuart James said it was “business as usual at The Glen, Kingsway and all of Monash”.

“The latest government advice clearly states people can go about their lives as normal and that includes eating out and shopping and supporting our local businesses,” he said.

Politicians also showed their support for the embattled Box Hill Central.
