A much-loved Chinese tradition is still happening at The Glen as Monash Council reminds shoppers and diners that centres across the municipality are still open for business despite growing concerns about the spread of coronavirus.

But escalating fears about the disease have forced the cancellation of the Glen Waverley Chinese New Year and Lantern Festival which was to be held on February 9.

Chef Jerry Mai will be at The Glen until February 9 offering her Prosperity Salad to diners.

The Prosperity Salad is traditionally celebrated during Lunar New Year when families sit at a table and toss the shredded ingredients into the air with chopsticks.

It is believed the height of the toss reflects the height of the diners’ growth in fortunes.

“The ingredients should all be brightly coloured, especially red and orange — these are colours that bring good luck,” Ms Mai said.

Mayor Stuart James said it was “business as usual at The Glen, Kingsway and all of Monash”.

“The latest government advice clearly states people can go about their lives as normal and that includes eating out and shopping and supporting our local businesses,” he said.

“Victoria’s Chief Health Officer said earlier this week that people don’t need to avoid the Glen Waverley area. Ensure you practice good hand hygiene by washing your hands, and covering your mouth when sneezing or coughing.”

Cr James said the council was in regular contact with the State Government to stay on top of the “rapidly changing situation”.

Glen Waverley Traders Association president Christo Christophidis said people shouldn’t panic.

“We empathise with anyone who wants to stay at home but we also want people to know that they don’t have to avoid the area,” he said.

Anyone who suspects they may have the coronavirus should phone the dedicated hotline on 1800 675 398.
