THINKING of getting a new furry friend? Marking the end of the fur-nancial year, a Burwood East animal shelter is waiving moggie adoption fees until Sunday.

Around 400 cats are available for free from RSPCA Victoria, with the animal charity to scratch the $120 adoption fee for cats until June 17, to help offload some of the 1000 cats in its care.

Cats adopted during the four-day promotion will also come with a 20 per cent discount desexing voucher for owners to pass on to another petowner, as RSPCA Victoria urges people to desex their pets.

Animal care manager Liz Walker said most of the 5500 cats the charity had taken into care the past six months had come in as strays or unplanned litters of kittens.

“This is a cycle we see repeated year after year, and one that places an unnecessary burden

on both the animal shelters and the public that care for them,” Ms Walker said.

Ms Walker said RSPCA Victoria invested a lot of time and money in caring for cats and

kittens — from vaccinations and desexing to foster care — before they could be given to a new home.

“A cat fee waiver means that RSPCA Victoria does not recover the cost of the care provided,

however it is important to us to get these animals into loving homes.”

The fee waiver applies to cats aged four months and over which are available at all RSPCA Victoria Animal Care Centres and participating Petbarn stores.

RSPCA Victoria is at 3 Burwood Hwy, Burwood East.
