Work on the first lot of homes neighbouring the innovative Burwood Brickworks shopping centre is expected to start in coming weeks.

The plans are for 750 houses and apartments, with details of the first stage of development released this week.

The first 155 homes will include a variety of three, four and five-bedroom dwellings in a mix of freestanding, semi-detached and terraced houses.

Homeowners will also have access to 2.5ha of open space and parklands, community facilities and an urban plaza adjoining the Burwood Brickworks shopping centre.

Property manager Sarah Bloom said many homes had already been bought, with families excited to be moving in within 12 months.

Hundreds turned out for the official opening of the shopping centre, which features a 2000sq m rooftop farm to service an in-house restaurant/bar, cafe and eatery.

About 250 trees have been planted to cover the northern side of the centre with fruit trees lining each row of the carpark.

After the coronavirus lockdown was implemented, the centre launched online classes to keep the community engaged.

The hub of the community will be the shopping centre, which was described as “so green it’s a living building”, opened in December.

Centre manager Peri McDonald said: “The journey we have undertaken in pursuit of delivering an actual living building is something that we are truly proud of.”

Thousands of people registered interest in buying one of the homes when the project was first made public more than 18 months ago.
