The owners of a Box Hill restaurant are getting people off their phones and back into traditional socialising with a ‘Speed Friendship Dating’ event.
People looking to have interesting, funny conversations and to pick up some new friends are encouraged to be part of “the best kind of friend zone” at Zero Mode on Friday, November 15.
Hosted by former The Bachelor and Bachelor in Paradise contestant Florence Alexandra, the night will feature rotating tables, silly conversations starters, bottomless cocktails and Asian-fusion canapes.
Zero Mode co-owner Yvette Xu, who came up with the idea for the event, said she wanted to get the community together and help foster connections.
“With lots of universities in the area, we wanted to encourage the younger generation to get away from Netflix for the night and come meet some people they might not have otherwise,” she said.
Ms Xu said she hoped attendees could spend the evening simply enjoying the present moment — the conversations and the amazing flavours of the cocktails and food.
“When working in a restaurant or cafe you notice sometimes people are more interested in taking photos of their food and showing everyone what the are eating than actually eating the food or drinking the drink,” she said.
Ms Xu said the night would be nothing like the stereotype that speed dating was static and boring, but rather lighthearted and fun.

And people keen-to-attend must agree with her, with only about 20 tickets remaining
Ms Xu said she was excited some of the ticket sales were only singular — meaning the attendee was coming on their own to meet new, interesting people.
Tickets to the speed friendship dating night cost $25 each and include canapes and unlimited cocktails, which are usually priced at $17-20 each.
If the event proves to be a success, Ms Xu said she was looking forward to holding more speed friendship dating events, and might tailor the events and hosts to different age groups.
