Getting between Melbourne Airport and the eastern suburbs — a pain at the best of times — is about to become easier, cheaper and more comfortable.

Longtime airport transfer company SkyBus is set to start servicing Melbourne’s east for the first time with the launch of its Eastern Express service.

From Sunday, the red buses will travel between Box Hill, Blackburn, Doncaster, Ringwood, Croydon, Watsonia and the airport regularly each day.

The buses will stop at Ringwood Station.

And to celebrate the service SkyBus is offering $2 rides throughout November.

The bus timetable will offer 11 services to and from the airport on weekdays between 4.30am and 9.15pm and seven on weekends and public holidays between 6.45am and 8.45pm.

Services will stop at Box Hill Central, Westfield Doncaster, and Blackburn, Ringwood, Croydon and Watsonia train stations, with tickets costing $20 from Blackburn and $30 from Croydon.

The train stations chosen mean people living as far east as Lilydale will be able to catch public transport directly to a SkyBus.

While travellers will be able to prepay for their trip online, bookings will not be required for the services, with customers able to buy tickets on the bus.

A one-way trip between Watsonia Station and Melbourne Airport will cost $15 for an adult.

The buses will all be equipped with free Wi-Fi and luggage compartments.

SkyBus chief executive Michael Sewards said the service was designed to provide a convenient, safe and reliable transport option in the eastern suburbs.

“Growing up in Donvale, I can relate to how difficult and costly it can be to access transport from the east to the airport,” he said.

“I know our new service will make life for so many families and frequent travellers so much easier by taking the stress out of airport transport.”

Before this service, people travelling from the eastern suburbs to the airport by public transport either have had to get themselves into the city to catch a SkyBus or have had to use the Airport Bus Eastside.

Airport Bus Eastside, a shuttle bus service, offers route and door-to-door services between Melbourne Tullamarine Airport and the eastern suburbs, but only runs to demand, requiring a booking, and is more expensive than regular SkyBus services.

Having been taken over by SkyBus, the shuttle bus service will continue to operate as an option for travellers.

Bookings can be made at airportbus.com.au.

Travellers will be able to find departing Eastern Express buses at the SkyBus Melbourne Airport hubs located at T1 and T4.
