Airbnb party terrifies neighbours for second time in Ashley St, Box Hill North

Neighbours have been left “terrified” for the second time in a month after screaming youths again caused chaos and trashed a Box Hill North Airbnb property. Police were forced to move abusive teens on from the home in the latest incident.

A wild house party in Melbourne’s east has caused a huge disturbance in nearby streets and left a rental property trashed for the second time in a month.

The incident, which ended in police herding screaming youths from the Box Hill North street about 10am yesterday, has left neighbours “terrified”, with one even talking of moving away.

Peter James was one of the Ashley St residents who watched “many, many police” drive the youths from the street as troublemakers hurled abuse at officers.

The party was held at the same house where another party turned wild on November 17.

Mr James said an officer told him police had already been out to break up a group of youths at the same house about 4.30am, while other residents took to Facebook to report being woken to “swearing, carrying on and scuffles in the street” about 6am.

Mr James said a series of police vans were in nearby streets, including the dog squad, in response to the group of young people, who were all of African appearance, and included “a lot” of females.

Victoria Police Sergeant Cameron Scott confirmed police attended the Ashley St property about 10am and asked a “heap of youths” to leave the area, which they did.

He said no one was arrested and no complaints were made to police.

The Whitehorse Leader is not suggesting the owner of the property has acted inappropriately.

Mr James said an officer on the scene confirmed the party had taken place in the same house where an Airbnb party turned wild on November 17, ending in up to 80 youths brawling in the streets and leaving the house significantly damaged.

He said the officer said the house had again been left with holes in the walls, and was covered in coca cola, and full of “little bags” like those used for holding drugs.

Mr James said the disturbance was “nowhere near as big” as the previous one, but had made neighbours even more concerned.

“I was gobsmacked that it happened again,” he said.

He said in the 30 years he had lived in the street, he’d “never, ever” encountered anything like what has happened in the past month.

“It’s pretty frightening,” he said. “This is Box Hill North.”

“I feel for the people with kids.”

“You go outside to mow your lawn and see that.”

Mr James said he wanted something to be done to stop the parties and put his neighbours at ease, with many “terrified at the moment”, and one talking of moving out of the street.

He said one neighbour was talking about starting a petition to Airbnb to stop the property being listed.

An Airbnb spokesman, who refused to be named, said: “We unequivocally condemn the reported behaviour and will ensure we hold those responsible accountable to our community standards and strict policies,” he said.

“The safety of hosts, guests and the wider community is always our top priority.”

He said unauthorised parties were strictly forbidden at Airbnb properties.

Whitehorse Leader understands the listing had stated “no party and smoking inside at all times” but has since been removed from the website.
