A self-confessed “mongrel doctor”, whose online rants against women include the statement “some women deserve to be raped”, no longer has a job at Box Hill Hospital.

Dr Christopher Kwan Chen Lee was working at the public hospital in April when the Medical Board of Australia suspended his medical licence over his previous derogatory online activity.

The suspension was initially meant to last just six weeks, but following public uproar about the doctor’s comments the board extended the suspension indefinitely.

Dr Lee started working at Box Hill Hospital in January 2019.

Meanwhile, Eastern Health, which received a flurry of online complaints for employing Dr Lee, said it was conducting a review into the board’s findings about his behaviour.

The organisation has just confirmed it no longer employs Dr Lee.

An Eastern Health spokesman, who refused to be named, said the organisation would not be providing further comment on the issue.

Dr Lee’s registration as a doctor remains suspended according to the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency’s register of practitioners.

Prior to his suspension, the Melbourne University graduate had been working at Box Hill Hospital since January.

His hearing before the Medical Board of Australia occurred in Hobart, relating to multiple times he committed “professional misconduct” between 2016 and 2018 when he was working in Tasmania.

The tribunal heard he posted comments on internet forums including, “she needs to be abandoned in India and repeatedly raped” and “If my marriage fell apart, it would not end in divorce. It would end in murder”.

Dr Lee freely shared he had a “foul mouth”, describing himself as a “mongrel doctor” in an online profile.

After news of the tribunal hearing broke, many outraged people took to social media to question how someone who had expressed Dr Lee’s views could work as a doctor.

“How can he be trusted in a medical setting?” one woman wrote on Twitter.

“Anyone going to Box Hill Hospital ought to lodge an immediate objection to his employment there.”
Eastern Health’s Facebook page was flooded with complaints at the time, which have since been deleted.

At the hearing, Dr Lee had told the tribunal his comments had never coloured his care of patients.
