Box Hill Central: Plans for a redevelopment of the shopping centre may soon be announced

For years, shoppers and commuters have cried out for an upgrade to congested Box Hill Central. And while digging through the details of the sale of a nearby piece of land, Whitehorse Leader has finally stumbled on evidence of a green light.

Commuters have long called for an upgrade to Box Hill’s railway station.

There could be light at the end of the tunnel for frustrated commuters who have long complained about the Box Hill transport interchange.

Box Hill Central management Vicinity Centres has confirmed it is working through plans for a major redevelopment of the hub.

However, it is yet to release any details or timelines around the project.

Vicinity manages a number of shopping centres across Australia, including Chadstone.

Whitehorse Leader has long campaigned for the need to upgrade the interchange.

Passengers arriving by train have to fight their way through shoppers to reach the bus interchange at the top of the centre.

The Box Hill interchange opened in 1987, but has been plagued with complaints that it outdated, has poor disability access and is hard to use when changing from buses to trains or trams.

A 2017 State Government report found the Box Hill interchange was the second busiest train-bus interchange in the metropolitan area.

The report found it was the 10th busiest train station overall, with commuter use expected to increase by more than 45 per cent by 2031.

It also found there were about 202 bus movements every hour during the peak morning times, with 6000 patrons using the bus interchange escalators between 8 and 9am on a weekday.

News of the major redevelopment came to light via a commercialrealestate.com.au listing for a Carrington Rd block.

The listing said agents expected “Vicinity will soon announce plans for a major redevelopment” of the centre.
