Fears raised about safety of Warrigal Rd overpass

Parents are struggling to get prams over a Warrigal Rd footbridge, with one dad claiming the overpass needs to be removed in favour of a ramp. Here’s why.

A narrow Warrigal Rd footbridge is a nightmare for parents juggling children and prams, an Oakleigh dad says.

The bridge runs over Warrigal Rd at the Euston Rd intersection and is used by kindergarten parents and Oakleigh Primary School students.

But Nathan Beard said he struggled to get his double stroller up and across the bridge and wants it replaced with something user friendly.

“I feel the footbridge doesn’t benefit the community. They need to put in a ramp instead of stairs or pedestrian lights,” he said.

“I take my kids across on a Tuesday morning and getting a double stroller across the foot bridge is very difficult.”

The nearest signalised pedestrian crossing of Warrigal Rd is at the Princes Hwy intersection about 200m away.

“It’s so hard for parents with kids in prams because it’s difficult to take a pram up and down stairs,” Mr Beard said.

Department of Transport spokeswoman Laura Swanton said the department had no record of complaints or safety concerns regarding the pedestrian bridge but that feedback was welcomed.
