A popular Boronia doughnut shop has been fined over its filthy kitchen and broken refrigerators after it consistently breached food safety standards for more than seven months.
Dodees Donuts and its owner Taimoor Tajuddin pleaded guilty to 20 food safety breaches in the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
The Boronia Rd shop failed multiple inspections from April to December last year.
Inspectors found dirty microwaves, walls, floors, ovens, freezers and mixers caked in food waste.
Display fridges were also found to be more than 10C warmer than regulated for doughnuts filled with cream.
Dodees Donuts staff were not able to demonstrate correct food safety practices to inspectors including being unable to find a thermometer to test the temperatures of refrigerated food products.
The court was also told about unrefrigerated cream tubs left on benches and open containers of sugar, butter and cocoa powder which were exposed to germs.
Mr Tajuddin said he was “sorry” and “felt shame” for his doughnut shop’s food safety failures.
After the December inspections he said the kitchen was heavily sanitised and several pest control measures were taken.
Mr Tajuddin also told the court some staff members — including a manager who was previously running the store — no longer worked there.
“I am personally cleaning up the shop,” he said.
Mr Tajuddin was fined $5000 without conviction for the breaches and the business was handed a $6000 with conviction.
Dodees Donuts also operates a store in Nunawading and is set to open a Narre Warren train station location on Saturday.
