Melbourne’s largest shopping centre has an impressive new landmark at its main entrance.

Known as The Link, the undercover pedestrian walkway connects guests at the recently opened Hotel Chadstone with retailers.

The walkway replaces part of a multi-level carpark in a move that Vicinity Centres hopes will create a more accessible and engaging entrance to Chadstone as plans for a multimillion-dollar redevelopment move into full swing.

Design teams from architectural firms Make Architects and Cera Stribley sourced specialist materials from Europe.

They used Australian experts and engineers to create the route that spans 110m and rises 15m.

Chadstone director Fiona Mackenzie said the centre was evolving to become “a world-class destination for retail, dining, entertainment, tourism, business and now luxury accommodation”.

“The Link has enhanced the amenity for the more than 24 million people who move between our offices, Hotel Chadstone and the retail precinct every year,” she said.

Landscaping, stairs and travelators have been positioned to create areas to relax as well as space for a new restaurant to spill out and flexible areas for events and pop-up uses, she said.

The design itself is highly sustainable, open at the sides to provide cross-ventilation and eliminate the need for airconditioning.

Artificial lighting is minimal, primarily used to illuminate the structure at night.
