A Golden Square drug dealer was busted with a collection of drugs to rival a small pharmacy, a court has heard.

Kyle Newby, 26, appeared in Bendigo Magistrates’ Court last week to plead guilty to 10 counts of drug offences and handling stolen goods.

Police found his stash of medication and illegal drugs when they arrested him on September 11 2020.

Newby was busted trafficking methylamphetamine, while also possessing 1,4 butanediol, and amphetamines.

The 26-year-old had the pharmaceutical drugs, temazepam medication used to treat insomnia, diazepam for alcohol withdrawals, and opioid painkillers buprenorphine and oxycodone.

He also possessed a schedule 4 poison metronidazole, an antibiotic used to treat infections.

Police also seized an Avanti branded bicycle, a Garrett branded metal detector, Mechpro socket set and assorted brand new tools and electronics, all suspected of being the proceeds of crime.

Newby also had cartridge ammunition, an extendible baton and five counterfeit $50 notes.

The court heard Newby was trafficking cannabis from June 15 to July 15.

While on bail and breaking his curfew, Newby was busted in possession with methyl amphetamine on January 18, 2021.

He also breached his bail by possessing a double edged flick-knife, drinking with friends and handling stolen registration plates, on July 2.

He was also caught driving an unregistered vehicle in Bendigo while disqualified in May.

His lawyer Luke Docherty said his client suffered from an acquired brain injury and alcohol addiction withdrawals.

Magistrate Patrick Southey said despite some breaches, the 26-year-old had proven himself while on bail, and had earned some trust of the court.

“You’ve demonstrated you’re fair dinkum,” Mr Southey said.

“You’re not a lost cause by any means.”

But Mr Southey said the critical reason for the Golden Square man’s chances of rehabilitation was quietly watching the court video link from her home.

“Thanks goes to his mother for her unfailing support of him,” Mr Southey said.

On Tuesday July 27 Newby was sentenced to two months prison, with 30 days already served.

After his release Newby will be placed on an 18-month community corrections order, focusing on his mental health and drug use.

He was also fined $200 for the counterfeit money.
