The 53-year-old Castlemaine man was taken into custody shortly after.
Stratton appeared in Bendigo Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday via a prison link for a filing hearing.
Sixteen family and friends of the victim walked into the courtroom when the matter was called.
Magistrate Megan Aumair said the 80-year-old man’s identity should not be disclosed in line with the family’s wishes.
Mr Stratton’s lawyer Julia Breheny said it was her client’s first time in custody.
Ms Breheny did not apply for bail.
Stratton is set to reappear in Bendigo Magistrates’s Court on October 13 for a committal mention.
