Woman escapes burning home northwest of Bendigo

A woman is lucky to be alive after her Charlton home was destroyed by fire on Monday morning.

A woman managed to escape her home northwest of Bendigo before it was destroyed by fire in the early hours of Monday morning.

A Country Fire Authority spokeswoman said five crews were called Charlton-Jeffcott Rd, Charlton at 2.13am Monday May 24 to find the home engulfed in flames.

The spokeswoman said the single storey weatherboard home had almost burnt to the ground by the time crews arrived.

She said a woman and the sole occupant of the home was able to escape before emergency services arrived.

Crews were able to contain the fire by 3.45am, with the scene declared safe an hour later.

The CFA said fire investigators would arrive on later on Monday morning to assess the cause of the blaze.
