A man who the Herald Sun has been prevented from naming not only possessed “astonishing” and “brutal” child abuse material also took images of his own granddaughter to upload to perverted sites.
The man from a small town in the state’s south, who the Herald Sun have been prohibited from naming for legal reasons, has been jailed for a maximum of six years and six months but will be eligible for parole after serving just four years and four months.
Clifford Grant, a pseudonym given to the man by the County Court, pleaded guilty to charges relating to accessing, possessing and producing child abuse material.
The court heard during a two-year period between June 2020 and June 2022 he accessed both videos and photos of young children online via a US-based chat website.
In total he accessed and possessed thousands of images and videos and told police in an interview he had been looking at it for eight to 10 years.
The court heard when questioned by police Grant told them “whatever you can think of I’ve probably got it”.
The images and videos were found on devices in his home, discovered during a search by the Australian Federal Police.
Judge Gerard Mullaly said the 1115 images and 243 videos he was found with depicted children, mostly of a preschool age, being “brutally and callously” raped, bound, tied up, gagged, penetrated, and being forced to perform sexual acts on other children.
He said Grant would have known what he was doing.
“One of the videos had the accurate but heartbreaking title of ‘hard baby rape’”, he said.
He said “these children were so very young”.
Grant also faced a production charge which related to him forcing his two-year-old granddaughter to pose, naked from the waist down, on the toilet and floor of the bathroom while he had been trusted to help her use the toilet.
Judge Mullaly said the fact he would exploit his own granddaughter showed a “dark aspect” to Grant’s character.
He said in court Grant had been a trusted adult and had taken advantage of someone who was not old enough to understand what was happening or the long-lasting implications.
The court heard the man had worked as a computer specialist which eventually led him to an administrative role in Victoria’s public service.
Judge Mullaly said this was a “soul destroying” and “very grave” example of this offending and it needed to be appropriately punished.
“There is not a lot to show you are genuinely remorseful,” he said.
Grant was jailed for a maximum of six years and six months and will be forced to register as a sex offender for life.
