16-year-old charged with armed robbery at Castlemaine high school, armed robberies

A 16-year-old boy allegedly robbed a Castlemaine high school student at knifepoint for his Nike TNs, a court has heard.

A 16-year-old boy who allegedly robbed a student at knifepoint for his Nike TNs also allegedly bashed his mum for turning off the Wi-Fi so he coudln’t play Xbox, a court has heard.

Police allege the teen entered the schoolyard of a Castlemaine high school at lunchtime in September and approached a student, a children’s court heard.

Police allege the teen showed the student a knife tucked in his belt and said “this would look good in your neck” before robbing the teen for his shoes.

The teen allegedly bashed and robbed another teenager at the Mitchell St bustop in May, the court heard.

He allegedly demanded the teen give him a vape, before he allegedly started punching and kicking the alleged victim for about 20 seconds, causing damage to his eye, cheekbone and nose.

On Wednesday the teen applied for bail at a children’s court on a slew of robbery, theft and assault related charges.

Police opposed bail, arguing his alleged offending was escalating.

On June 24, the teen allegedly stole a slab of Jim Beam cans from a Castlemaine liquor store, got drunk and then attacked a random person on the main road, the court heard.

Police allege the youth came out of some bushes at a stranger who was walking to the gym and hit him in the head with a bottle, leaving the victim bleeding from a gash on his forehead that required four stitches.

The teen is also charged in relation to two armed robberies in the Melbourne CBD in August.

Police allege the teen was among a gang of 10 others who attacked and robbed two random people, two days after he had been released on bail.

The youths then went to Southern Cross station and allegedly robbed another victim for his jacket, wallet, phone and shoes.

Police arrested the group shortly afterwards, finding the accused teen wearing the stolen Nikes from the first alleged victim, and the second alleged victim’s wallet in his pocket.

When interviewed, the teen “repeatedly told police ‘I don’t give a f--k’”, police alleged in court.

The teen is also charged with terrorising his mother for months while she tried to keep him out of trouble.

When his mother turned off the Wi-Fi to punish him, he allegedly attacked her because he couldn’t play Xbox.

When she threatened to call the police, he allegedly said: “You can but I will f--king kill you … I will f--king stab you”.

He then allegedly took a cricket bat and smashed up his mother’s bedroom.

The court heard the teen’s mother had feared for her life, and had since hidden all the knives in the house.

In another incident the teen allegedly spat in his mother’s face when she tried to get him to come home from roaming the streets.

She returned home and went to bed, only to be woken to the teen on his hands and knees allegedly rifling through her handbag looking for drugs.

When she tried to stop him, he allegedly attacked her and laughed as his mother started to cry in pain after he allegedly slammed her into the bedframe.

The defence argued that the teen was being kept alongside alleged criminal associates in youth detention, which risked sending him down a path of criminality in the long-term.

The magistrate said he couldn’t grant bail because the teen had refused to engage with youth justice services or any supports.

The bail application will return after a further assessment from youth justice.
