A Bendigo carjacker stole his own mum’s car at gunpoint before trying to escape from police during a raid.

Declan Jones, 20, pleaded guilty at Bendigo Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday to aggravated carjacking.

On July 9 Jones lured his mother from her workplace, telling her that her daughter was in trouble and they needed to help her before robbing her at gunpoint for her silver Mazda.

Jones pointed the gun at her and said “give me your car. I’m sorry I have to do this. I don’t want to shoot you”, before taking off in her car and leaving her on the side of the road in a state of shock, the court previously heard.

The court heard the weapon was an imitation firearm, which he also pleaded guilty to possessing as a prohibited person.

Jones was arrested a week later when seven police officers raided a Long Gully address.

Jones attempted to flee police during his arrest, but was successfully collared.

Magistrate Russell Kelly committed Jones to the County Court where he will be sentenced in February next year.

Jones has been remanded in custody since his arrest after two unsuccessful bail applications, and will remain behind bars ahead of his next court date.
