A woman has been taken to hospital after a car mounted the footpath and damaged a shop front before knocking her to the ground in West Gippsland.
Emergency services were called to the scene on Smith St in Warragul just after 3.30pm on Thursday.
A nearby witness said the driver of a red Subaru left tyre marks on the concrete, damaged the front of the “Colours Are Brighter” store, hit the woman and three other vehicles before crashing into a concrete bench near a pedestrian crossing.
“The driver of the vehicle, a 77-year-old man, stopped at the scene,” a police spokesperson said.
The 23-year-old patient was lying on the concrete shaking when paramedics assisted her, was placed on a stretcher and taken to the Dandenong Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
Emergency service volunteers cleaned up the debris at the scene and Warragul Towing was called to remove the vehicles involved.
Trafalgar local Jake Williams said he was at KFC across the road when he saw the car hit the woman and heard her scream.
“He (the driver) came onto the footpath and onto a big concrete pillar and the car wheels were still going,” the 20-year-old said.
“It was quite scary to be honest — a little bit overwhelming.
“Just be a lot more careful and observe everywhere.”
An employee of the “Colours Are Brighter” shop, who asked to remain anonymous, also heard screams from the woman.
She said she had a customer in the shop when she heard the crash and saw the car hit the premises.
The woman added the crash sounded like two cars had “reversed into each other” and heard “revs”.
A CFA spokesperson said crews arrived on scene and found no occupants trapped inside the vehicle.
“Three CFA units from Warragul and Drouin attended the scene alongside SES and Ambulance Victoria,” the spokesperson said.
“The incident was deemed under control at 3.47pm and safe at 3.57pm.”
Authorities cleared the scene just after 5pm and investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
Anyone with more information, witnessed the crash or has dashcam/CCTV footage is urged to contact the Warragul police station on (03) 5622 7111.
