The Bass Coast community has rallied around a mother who was diagnosed with breast cancer, raising more than $5000 for research into the disease.

Cheryl Wilson, from Wattle Bank north of Inverloch, knew what the results would be on the second day of her mammogram when she had a biopsy.

“I cried for the one hour drive home, thinking about how I would tell my kids,” Ms Wilson said in the fundraiser.

“I had to wait for a week for the confirmation, but I already knew what they would tell me. I had breast cancer.

“It was the worst day of my life.”

Ms Wilson said she was extremely lucky to have a lot of people who cared about her and were supporting her throughout her journey.

Her son and his friends have all proudly grown their hair out and are ready to shave their heads in support of the fundraiser, in order to raise money for the cause and L Rigby Integrated Care Centre at Bass Coast Health.

Within the Bass Coast Shire in South Gippsland, Bass Coast Health in Wonthaggi is the largest provider of public healthcare.

“Friends and family are welcome to contribute or participate in any way you can,” Ms Wilson said.

“Any dollar you can spare will be greatly appreciated by everyone who has or is going through breast cancer treatment.

“Thank you so much for your support.”
