Private Gippsland high schools tuition fees in 2024: How much does it cost to send students to school?

The cost of living is rising, and so are the prices at private high schools across the Gippsland region. How much are these schools charging for tuition fees in 2024?

Victorian government not ‘keen’ on addressing cost of living amid school expense inflation

With the new school year almost on us, families already tightening the belt to deal with the cost of living crisis are having to dip into the savings to send their children to private schools.

How much are non-government schools across Gippsland charging, and are there any extra costs?

Newhaven College, St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School and the Education Centre Gippsland Community College’s 2024 tuition fees are still yet to be confirmed, but parents can also expect an increase in costs from these schools.

See below the comparison of pricing for domestic students from years 7 to 12 at schools across Gippsland in 2023 and 2024, and their highest naplan and VCE results.

Gippsland Grammar School

NAPLAN rank (2023): 102

Year 9 average (2023): 599.4

The most expensive private school to attend is Gippsland Grammar in Sale — 213km east of Melbourne.

The tuition fees in 2023 for a year 7 was $16,082 and rose to $16,850 this year — an increase of approximately 4.8 per cent.

For year 8, 2023’s tuition fees were $16,547 and increased to $17,340 this year — also a 4.8 per cent jump.

Tuition fees for year 9 students last year were $18,494 and jumped to $19,380, while year 10 fees rose to $17,920 compared to $17,097 last year.

Year 11’s fees also increased this year, totalling $18,860 compared to last year’s fee of $18,028.

Enrolment fees are also $110 per student, and family admission fees are $695 and is a non-refundable fund that secures a student priority of placement when applying for entry in any year level.

Gippsland Grammar also offers sibling discounts, where a second student is nine per cent off, a third student is 27 per cent off and a fourth is 44 per cent off.

The school’s median ATAR for last year was 73.8, and Georgia Shell received the dux award, scoring an ATAR of 97.6.

Chairo Christian School (Drouin)

NAPLAN rank (2023): 326

Year 9 average (2023): 573.6

The cost of sending the oldest/first child to all Chairo Christian School locations for years 7 and 8 was $7404 in 2023, jumping to $7827 in 2024 — a 5.5 per cent increase.

Year 9 and 10 fees in 2024 have risen to $8405, compared to $7750 in 2023 — an increase of about 8.5 per cent.

Year 11 and 12 2024 fees were $9154, compared to $8477 in 2023 — which was approximately an eight per cent increase ($677 more).

An additional cost also includes a capital levy of $300 per family — adding the total cost for a Year7/8 to be $8127, $8705 for year 9/10 and $9454 for year 11/12

Ruth Tucker was also named dux of Chairo Christian School Drouin with scoring an ATAR of 98.35.

Marist-Sion College

NAPLAN rank (2023): 383

Year 9 average (2023): 551

Marist Sion College in Warragul has the same fees from year 7 all the way through to year 12.

Last year’s tuition fees were a total of $6260 per student, and have increased to $6717 — a rise of 7.2 per cent.

Other payment plans are also available, and for one student, it’s a $1679 quarterly fee, $129 weekly fee, $258 fortnight fee or a $559 monthly fee.

The school also offers a discount if two or more students attend Marist, with two students totalling $11,985, three students for $13,445, and four or more students at a price of $14,175.

The dux of the college in 2023 was Shannon Huntingford, who received a score of 98.95.

Lavalla Catholic College — St Paul’s Campus

NAPLAN rank (2023): 363

Year 9 average (2023): 553.6

The catholic school in Traralgon covers years 7 to 9 — and fees have jumped to $6311 per year and year level, compared to $5981 last year — a 5.5 per cent increase.

The fees will include all charges relating to the delivery of curriculum including VET, VCAL, materials fees, camps and retreats.

Discounts were also available to families who made full payment of the global tuition fee by February 28 last year, or committed to and honour an agreed payment plan that concluded before October 31 — which was $180 off for one student.

Lavalla Catholic College — Kildare Campus

The Lavalla Catholic College Kildare campus is just around the corner from the junior St Paul’s campus, and consists of years 10 to 12.

Like the St Paul’s campus, the three higher levels of schooling have the same tuition fees — which were $6281 last year and jumped to $6627 this year — an increase of about 5.5 per cent.

Ethan Jarvis, Lavalla Catholic College’s dux of 2023, and was in the top 2.5 per cent in the state.

There were seven other students who received an ATAR score above 90 and were the top 10 per cent in the state — they were Montanna Styles, Myiah Misiurka, Miles Verschuur, Quin Boorer, Alyssa Ford, Emily Ryan and Mia Guarascio.

Mary MacKillop Catholic Regional College

NAPLAN rank (2023): 362

Year 9 average (2023): 553.6

MacKillop Catholic Regional College in Leongatha has the same fees for all year levels.

In 2023, tuition fees per student were $5920 and have jumped to $6217 in 2024 — a five per cent increase.

A two student family is also $10,745 and three or more students is discounted to $13,858.

The fees cover the capital levy, magazine levy, camp, sport, excursions, laptops, compulsory education subscriptions and buses.

There’s also an enrolment deposit of $150.

Fees are charged to families every February, which can be paid weekly, fortnightly, monthly, per term or annually.

The fees are reviewed by the college each year in October/November and are approved by the Advisory Committee and DOSCEL — and parents are notified of any price increases prior to the end of the school year.

The dux of Mary MacKillop Catholic Regional College in 2023 was Gabrielle Perry, who achieved an ATAR score of 97.55.
