“My literature teacher Mr Whitney was incredible. He is so passionate, even though he has been teaching a long time. He would bring in tea, coffee and biscuits which really helped class discussion and made you feel more like an adult being helped to succeed rather than just being talked at for an hour.

Aya intends to study a Bachelor of Science at Melbourne University, focusing on biology – a subject she studied out of her own interest.

Like many students, Aya said Year 12 was “definitely one of the harder years in terms of motivation”. She credits her teachers for their ongoing support with her studies and particularly her friends and family for keeping her going.

Stella Xie’s VCE journey is an unusual one.

After spending the first few years of her secondary schooling at a private school, Stella decided she wanted to complete her VCE at a public school, joining St Albans at the start of Year 11.

“I wanted to be at an inclusive, multicultural school, which wasn’t the experience I had at my former school – that was really important to me - I wanted to be around other people from similar backgrounds and experiences to mine,” she said.

“There are international students everywhere here, and I just instantly felt embraced and supported.”

The move paid off academically as well.

“I got an ATAR score of 97.45, and 47 in English, which is much better than I expected, so I’m really excited,” she said.

“I guess you could say I took a risk, but the support I received here has been incredible – from the school, from the teachers, from other students – I honestly don’t think I would have done as well as I have at a private school.”

Stella said while she was undeniably thrilled with her results, she is more excited by how she has grown as a person.

“The year has tested me mentally and academically, and I feel I have learnt so much, and I’m now equipped with so many skills, I’m ready for university,” she said.

Exactly what that will be, she’s not quite sure.

“I either want to pursue economics at Melbourne University, or study literature and become a professor,” she said.

“I’ve always loved English, but I’ve developed a strong passion for economics, and I don’t know if I can let that go.”
