Woman flown to The Alfred with life-threatening injuries after crash in Maffra dies

A woman who suffered from life-threatening injuries after a crash in central Gippsland has died in hospital.

A driver who was flown to hospital after a crash in Victoria’s southeast has died from her injuries.

Emergency services were called to the scene on the corner of Beet and Stratford-Maffra roads in Maffra just before 12.30pm on Tuesday.

“Detectives believe the driver of a silver 2001 Toyota Corolla sedan had come to a stop on the road to turn into a driveway when the vehicle was hit from behind by a 2022 Mitsubishi Triton utility,” a police spokesman said.

The driver of the sedan, a 37-year-old Maffra woman, was flown to The Alfred with life-threatening injuries where she later died.

The driver of the ute, a 35-year-old Stratford man, stopped at the scene.

He was taken to hospital and has since been released pending further enquiries.

The investigation remains ongoing MCIU detectives.

A CFA spokesman said units from Maffra and Stratford attended the scene alongside SES.

“Upon arrival, crews found no persons to be trapped,” the spokesperson said.

Users in a Stratford community Facebook page described the crash as a “big smash”.

The incident was deemed under control at 12.46pm and declared safe at 1.15pm.

Stratford-Maffra Rd remained closed for several hours, where detours were in place for motorists.
