Old Yulungah Primary School building on Yulungah Rd in Trafalgar completely destroyed by blaze

A beloved old primary school building that was a part of Gippsland’s history has been destroyed by fire leaving locals devastated.

A historic Gippsland primary school building has been destroyed by a fire, devastating locals.

The Yulungah Primary School was a small, abandoned building on Yulungah Rd in Trafalgar, that was burnt to the ground just before 3am on Wednesday.

A CFA spokesperson said seven CFA units alongside FRV responded to the blaze.

“Crews discovered a structure was on fire and it was reduced to rubble,” the spokesperson said.

“It spread to grass approximately 20m x 10m.

“Crews responded from Trafalgar, Yarragon, Westbury, Willow Grove and Warragul.”

The incident was deemed under control at 3.19am and safe at 4.26am.

A police spokeswoman said Baw Baw CIU detectives were investigating the fire and it was being treated as suspicious.

“There were no injuries,” the spokeswoman said.

Facebook user Linda Barraclough shared the announcement in the Gippsland History page, a group that shares pictures and information on some of the region’s most iconic landmarks and has more than 42,000 members.

The Trafalgar Community Noticeboard also shared the news with many users familiar with the old school.

“Yulungah was my first school in 1955 lots of memories,” user Beverley Webb commented.

“So sad that apart of history is now destroyed,” Donna Baker Noonan wrote.

“I loved that old building took some pictures there a few years ago,” Karen Edwards said.

“I grew up in Traf that’s really sad,” local Mary Hay wrote.

“Why would someone do that, this is near my family home I drove past it frequently — so sad to see this happen,” another commented.

The investigation remains ongoing.
