A young boy and a woman in her 30s are dead after a car slammed into the back of their car in South Gippsland on Friday afternoon.

Police said their car was stationary and waiting to turn right on the South Gippsland Highway when the horror smash happened in the coastal town of Korumburra about 3.30pm.

The driver of the car who hit them from the rear, a 59-year-old Bass man, was placed in police custody.

The force of the crash caused the car to cross over to the other side of the road into an oncoming truck.

The woman and the child both died at the scene.

The truck driver was spoken to by police.

Korumburra local Debra Rawson drove past the accident about 10 minutes after it occurred.

She was driving back from Leongatha with her 13-year-old granddaughter in the front seat whose “face said it all”.

“It was pretty traumatising,” Ms Rawson said.

“I felt sick and saddened by what I saw ahead”.

Rawson said there was “so much debris on the road” including a wheel in the middle of it.

Detectives from Major Collision Investigation Unit are continuing to investigate on Friday night and are appealing for anyone driving through the area with dashcam footage to come forward.

Emergency services are on scene, with heavy vehicles asked to detour via Iverloch, using the Bass Highway and Inverloch-Korumburra Rd.

The road will re-open when investigations are complete and it’s safe to do so.
