A Heyfield man who was busted stealing from a Traralgon petrol station with a fake gun, tried to convince police it wasn’t him, but a “desperate unit with a sock”.

Coby Brereton, 24, pleaded guilty in the County Court to charges including armed robbery and committing an indictable offence while on bail.

The court heard that Brereton entered a Traralgon petrol station holding the fake gun covered in a handkerchief on July 22, 2019.

He had his hood pulled over his head, was wearing a face covering and had white gloves on.

Brereton pointed the imitation gun at a worker who was behind the counter and shouted “give me the money and no one gets hurt”.

The worker was terrified so he put the till on the counter and Brereton grabbed $700 from it.

Brereton was arrested the following morning after police saw a white ute and an individual that matched the description of him.

Brereton had $405 in cash on him at the time of his arrest.

In an interview with police, Brereton stated he “couldn’t remember much” but he could remember driving his car, getting on drugs and “destroying himself”.

Brereton claimed he has never seen or owned a firearm before.

He said it wasn’t him that did it but rather it was a “desperate unit with a sock”.

When asked about the sock to replicate a handgun, Brereton answered “what else would they use?”

Judge Duncan Allen said it was “very serious offending”.

The hearing was adjourned until December 11.
