A child has been flown to hospital with serious injuries after she was hit by a car in the state’s east.
It’s believed 12-year-old girl was hit at the intersection of George St and A’Beckett Rd in Bunyip at 5.30pm on Tuesday.
An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said the child was flown to the Royal Children’s Hospital in a critical condition with upper and lower body injuries.
“The driver, a 37-year-old Bunyip woman, was not injured and is assisting police with their inquiries,” the spokesperson said.
Bunyip police Sergeant Danny Hower said the child was from the Bunyip area.
Sgt Hower said the driver stopped at the scene and rendered assistance to the child.
“There doesn’t appear to be any driver fault from the initial investigation,” he said.
It’s understood there was one person who witnessed the collision.
Sgt Hower said there was no mention in the investigation on whether the child was coming home from school.
Pakenham highway patrol are still investigating the incident.
A Bunyip woman, who asked not to have her name published, said drivers needed to be aware of children on the road.
“I am thinking of the girl and her family and praying she has a safe recovery in hospital,” the woman said.
“Drivers need to be more aware on our roads, particularly in smaller towns, because anyone, just like this little girl, could either be crossing the road or walking on the footpath near the road.
“No parent deserves to experience this.”
