Teens film racist attack

Police are cracking down on cyber bullying across the Bass Coast after videos circulated racially attacking a Wonthaggi student.

A Year 9 Wonthaggi Secondary College student Kara Nasilasila was targeted in two separate videos shared to social media last week.

One teenager in the video called the 14-year-old the N-word, “gorilla” and referred to her as a “burnt sausage”.

Senior Sergeant Peter Watson said police were investigating and bullying was a criminal offence.

“The people involved are very young so we have to interview them and work out what the best course of action is,” Sen-Sgt Watson said.

“It’s more of a learning outcome that we are after.”

Sen-Sgt Watson said bullying in any form was not acceptable and people must report it to police.

He said it was likely the issue was more prevalent than what was being reported.

“I think it happens more than what we get told about,” he said.

“If we don’t get told about it, we often don’t know about it so we can’t take action.”

Sen-Sgt Watson police were working with the schools involved.

He also urged people not to “take things into their own hands” after objects were thrown at a person’s house involved with the videos.

Sen-Sgt Watson could not confirm whether the bullies or victim were attacked.

“We are aware of other people getting involved whether it’s online or physically and verbally abusing different parties,” Sen-Sgt Watson said.

“We basically want all this action to stop and people shouldn’t be taking things into their own hands.

“We hope there’s a certain amount of education that will come out of it.”
