Wonthaggi Secondary College student attacked by bullies in shocking racist video

Shocking video footage shows teens bullying a Bass Coast student in a vile racist attack.

Teens film racist attack

A Bass Coast student has been “publicly humiliated” by vicious bullies who racially attacked her in videos they shared on social media.

One video, sent directly to Year 9 Wonthaggi Secondary College student Kara Nasilasila by a fellow student, shows a teenage boy calling her the N-word, ‘gorilla’ and referring to her as a “burnt sausage”.

Another video uploaded to TikTok shows a teenage girl dancing with the caption “gorilla”.

The 14-year-old Fijian student said she had been bullied for three years but the attacks escalated online this week.

Ms Nasilasila said she knew the teen girl but shockingly she had never met the boy.

“I’ve grown up with it my whole life,” Ms Nasilasila said.

“But this (the video referring to her as a sausage) was the tip of the iceberg for me.”

Ms Nasilasila’s mum Felicity Mazur says schools must get better at educating students that bullying and racism will not be tolerated.

“She pretends that she doesn’t get affected but it gets to a certain point where she can’t take it anymore,” she said.

“The public humiliation online has really got to her.”

Ms Mazur, who lives in Cowes, said she was angry and frustrated that her daughter had been targeted by students online and in the schoolyard.

“She’s been called ‘monkey’ so many times and used to get food thrown at her in the canteen line in primary school,” she said.

“I’ve had enough.”

Wonthaggi Secondary College Principal Darren Parker said the school was investigating the claims and would provide “full support” for Ms Nasilasila.

“We’re very proud of our reputation as a diverse and multicultural school that is welcoming and safe for all students,” he said.

“Any form of racism or bullying is utterly unacceptable.”

Mr Parker said the health and wellbeing of the students was the school’s “top priority”.

The teenage boy in one of the videos is believed to be a student at Mary MacKillop Catholic Regional College in Leongatha.

Its acting principal Margaret McKenna said the school did not tolerate any form of bullying, harassment or racism.

“We are aware of footage circulating on social media that appears to show a student from Mary MacKillop Catholic Regional College making hurtful, racist remarks,” she said.

“The remarks in the video do not align with the behaviour we encourage and expect from our students.”

Melbourne psychologist Sally-Anne McCormack said teachers needed to empower students to take a stand against bullying.

“Parents of young students need to educate themselves and be more aware of what their children are up to when they are using technologies,” she said.

“With older children, we need to talk to them about the difference that bystanders can and must make.”
