Bass Coast Health has become political bargaining ground ahead of election

The Wonthaggi and Phillip Island Hospitals could get millions regardless of who wins the November state election.

Wonthaggi Hospital has become a bargaining ground with the Coalition announcing its own funding package on Tuesday.

The Liberal Party has announced $300m for Wonthaggi Hospital Stages two and three, onsite accommodation for healthcare workers and a learning centre. A helipad is also on the future plans if they are elected in November.

The expansion would include new wards and extra beds, a new labour and delivery complex, a new outpatient clinic, an improved medical imaging unit, upgraded spaces for allied health treatment, upgraded admin and training areas, more car parks, and a new Learning and Development Precinct.

At least 750 jobs will be created through the development of the project.

Opposition Health Minister, Georgie Crozier said on Tuesday said it wasn’t just about the building but also the training.

“Our plan isn’t just about new and upgraded hospitals, but also delivering more staff and creating a better skilled and coordinated health workforce for the future,” Ms Crozier said.

Liberal Member for Bass Aaron Brown said this would be a “world class” upgrade.

“Our plan will support our local healthcare workers, and importantly deliver a helipad for extreme cases when lives are on the line,” Mr Brown said.

The Coalition also promised they would deliver the Phillip Island Hospital if elected.

Nationals candidate for Bass, Brett Tessari said the facility would provide “modern and responsive healthcare” for locals.

“The Phillip Island community deserve to know that come November 26, if the Liberals and Nationals form Government their long-awaited Community Hospital will be a priority,” Mr Tessari said.

It comes after Labor announced $290m for stage two of the Wonthaggi Hospital expansion last month.

More to come.
