Commonwealth Games coming to Victoria in 2026

Gippsland will host five sports in the 2026 Victoria Commonwealth Games.

Shooting and Para Shooting, Women’s T20 Cricket, Badminton, Rugby Sevens and Road Cycling are all set to be held in the state’s south.

The Games’ village location has also been locked in and will be built on English Street, Morwell.

It will house about 1000 athletes and officials.

Commonwealth Games Delivery Minister Jacinta Allan said she was excited to see the Games come to Gippsland.

“Along with the local community, I can’t wait to see the Commonwealth’s best talent performing in Moe, Morwell and Traralgon for the Victoria 2026 Commonwealth Games,” she said.

The community and the Traditional Owners will have say in the village design process as the games wants it to “celebrate the rich culture of the Gunaikurnai people and the Gippsland region’s vibrant communities and landscapes”.

Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing said the Gippsland community couldn’t wait to take part in the games.

“With five sports and the Games Village location now locked in, I’m excited to see some of the Commonwealth’s best athletes here in Gippsland,” she said.

The Cycling Road Race will finish with a criterium in Gippsland with athletes racing for gold within central Traralgon.

T20 Cricket is part of the games’ women’s sports program and the reigning world champion Australian team will fight to defend the gold medal they won at this year’s Commonwealth Games.

Shooting promises to be an engaging competition, with competitors up against a strong Indian team that has taken home shooting gold at every Games since 1998.

Commonwealth Games Australia chief executive Craig Phillips said he was particularly excited for the shooting events.

“CGA is excited about the program of sports on offer in Gippsland, with Badminton, Rugby Sevens, T20 Cricket, Road Cycling and the return of Shooting which, for the first time, will include events for para athletes,” he said.

It is estimated the 2026 Commonwealth Games will contribute more than $3bn to Victoria’s economy, creating more than 600 full-time equivalent jobs before they start, 3900 jobs during the Games and a further 3000 jobs after the Closing Ceremony.
