Bass Coast Council has been recognised for its leading pandemic recovery strategy and contributions to the tourism industry.

Council recently received the gold award in the tourism category of the Local Government Awards. It also took out the silver award in the Visitor Information Services category at the 2022 tourism awards.

In its submissions for the first award council highlighted hosting off-peak events in winter, supporting post pandemic recovery and increased marketing efforts.

Programs like its shopfront improvement program, activation and entertainment rebates, voucher programs and training opportunities have all been part of leading the pandemic recovery recognised in the award.

Seasonal challenges and the peaks and troughs in visitation was one of the main challenges identified in the Phillip Island and San Remo Visitor Economy Strategy.

To combat this council developed products and experiences that sat outside of the peak period and invested in events to bring visitors to the region during the low and shoulder seasons.

Some of these events were The Inverloch Jazz Festival, the Island Whale Festival, Inverloch Yoga Festival and Tour of Gippsland.

Mayor, Cr Michael Whelan, said the awards were a great honour.

“Council is extremely pleased to be recognised for our continued work in attracting events and increasing the tourism appeal of the Bass Coast,” he said.

“The Awards give us a chance to not only reflect on our tourism achievements within the past year but inspires us to continue to be innovative and focus on continuous improvement in the tourism sector.”

Businesses in Bass Coast also did incredibly well at the awards.

Phillip Island Nature Parks was awarded Silver in the Eco-tourism category and Harman Wines took home Bronze in the Tourism Wineries, Distilleries and Breweries category.
