Thousands of racegoers flocked to one of Bass Coast’s most popular cup days on the weekend (See the pictures and best dressed competition below).
The Woolamai Racing Club welcomed punters through the gates from 11am on Saturday where they experienced a day full of action at the Alex Scott and Staff Woolamai Cup.
The first race commenced at 1.30pm, and there were a variety of things people enjoyed at the cup, including food, music and the fashions on the field competition for their chance to win some special prizes.
Categories for the fashion comp included most fashionable junior U16, most fashionable suit and most fashionable dress.
Club secretary Abby Boyle said ahead of time that preparations for the event started two weeks ago.
“Our committee members and volunteers are the backbone of our race club as all picnic race clubs — and a lot of them were here until about 11pm (Thursday night) under headlights just getting things done and finishing off setting up,” Ms Boyle said.
“We’ve had all the marquees put up and just getting ahead and doing all the last minute bits and pieces.”
She said she was expecting more than 2000 people to attend the cup.
“It’s going to be quite big,” Ms Boyle said.
“From a club and picnic racing point of view, it’s just fantastic to see the crowds that are coming through — it just shows that picnic racing is alive, well and kicking goals for the local communities which I think is just a big deal.
“Especially at the moment with the cost living — I think picnic racing provides a really great day out for families where it’s $15 for an adult and kids up to 17 are free.
“And you can bring you own food, drinks, picnic rugs and chairs — it just provides such a great family outing or a day with your mates that isn’t over the top.”
