Olympian Scott Ferrier dominated the athletics arena during his decorated career but it’s a different sport where he’s chasing his next win.
Scott has partnered with his brother, Ben, to open X-Golf Ballarat, which is set to open next Monday, May 26, at 810 Norman Street in Wendouree, next to Oz Tenpin Bowling.
X-Golf allows people to play golf on indoor simulators in a leisurely or competitive environment.
It’s designed to cater for those who want to give it a go, in a relaxed environment with mates, and for those who play golf regularly and are looking to improve their game if they can’t get to a golf course.
Scott enters the venture after a decorated decathlon career.
He won three national championships, a silver medal at the 1998 Commonwealth Games and competed at two Olympic Games.
The former athlete said the opportunity to combine a sport he loved and working with his brother was an opportunity too good to refuse.
“This opportunity came up through a friend of mine who’s got another X-Golf franchise,” he said.
“I always loved the idea of working with my brother and this presented an opportunity to do that.
“Ben lives in Ballarat, so this was great (for him).
“It gave us the opportunity to say let’s do it.”
Scott’s wife, Alison Inverarity, the daughter of Western Australian cricket legend John, is also involved.
The former Australian high jump record holder will help running of the business alongside Scott and Ben.
Ben said the project had been two years in the making as the brothers tried to find the right location.
The original plan was to open at Christmas last year but the move to May has allowed both to fine tune the venue and get everything right.
Ben now hopes the Ballarat community can embrace golf in a different way.
“Golf is growing but it’s the type of sport that traditionally has had barriers for entry,” he said.
“X-Golf is welcoming for a non-traditional golfer.
“You can come here having never swung a golf club.
“You can sit on the simulator, it might be the middle of the day and there’s not many people around, and you are not feeling that intimidation.
“We make the experience really simple.”
X-Golf also caters to those who have played for a long time and are looking to add to their game.
The simulators can be set up to make it easy for novices and difficult for professionals.
Bookings are now open ahead of the launch.
