A vehicle believed to have been involved in a ram raid at an Alfredton golf club has been found burnt out north of Ballan.

Police are investigating after a silver station wagon smashed through the front glass doors of Ballarat Golf Club on Sturt St about 1.45am on Wednesday.

Two masked men unsuccessfully tried to tow away an ATM.

It is believed the offenders left empty-handed and were last seen heading towards Lucas.

They remain at large.
