Police have identified the driver of a truck who was killed after his vehicle “lost control” near Ballarat, plunging onto railway tracks.
Emergency services were rushed to the Western Highway, near the Midland Highway overpass, in Wendouree after reports a B-double truck had crashed about 3.45am.
He had reportedly lost control of the vehicle, veering off the road and into a ditch before coming to a stop on the Ballarat Maryborough railway line.
The driver, a 28-year-old man from Truganina, died at the scene.
The Western Fwy was closed for several hours on Thursday as investigators poured over the scene and a crane was brought in to remove the truck.
Both the Midland Hwy and the Western Fwy west-bound have since reopened to traffic, while Melbourne-bound lanes remain closed as investigations continue.
A V/Line spokesman said Marybrough to Southern Cross services was adjusted to originate from Ballarat while the section of track was closed.
“Passengers travelling between Maryborough and Ballarat can board a replacement coach to complete their journey,” he said.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal crash and will prepare a report for the Coroner.
Anyone who witnessed the crash, or with dashcam is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
