It was a horror weekend on Victorian roads with three separate fatalities, as deaths on regional roads pass a grim milestone.

Faces of Vic's 2022 pedestrian road toll

Three people have died in separate incidents on Victorian roads over the weekend as regional deaths soared past 100 lives lost.

The most recent crash occurred at Swan Reach shortly after 8pm on Sunday after a vehicle lost control on the Princes Hwy.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said investigators believe the vehicle struck a roadside barrier before bouncing off the railings and into oncoming traffic.

The female driver of the vehicle died at the scene while the solo driver of a second car was cut from the wreckage and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Earlier the same day a motorist in Tinamba called triple-0 after coming across a vehicle which had slammed into a tree.

Emergency services were rushed to the corner of Heyfield-Upper Maffra Rd and Tinamba-Seaton Rd at about 3.20pm, discovering the driver had died at the scene.

A Police spokeswoman said the sole occupant had yet to be identified and an investigation into the incident was ongoing.

The third incident occurred when a 30-year-old Lysterfield South man was struck by a car while walking in Hawthorn East on Saturday night at about 11.10pm.

He was rushed to hospital but sadly died from his injuries on Sunday.

The spokeswoman said the driver, a 39-year-old from Surrey Hills, stopped at the scene and was assisting police.

The horror weekend has taken Victoria’s road toll to 179 lives lost so far this year, a jump of more than 20 deaths compared to the same period in 2021.

101 fatalities have now occurred on regional roads, an increase of 30 per cent on the previous year.
