A man will spend years behind bars for inflicting a horrific and violent assault on a woman in Ballarat.
Nathan Waight appeared at the Ballarat County Court on Wednesday where he was sentenced for a list of serious charges including intentionally causing injury, making a threat to kill, two charges of conduct endangering life, two charges of rape, false imprisonment, intending to cause harm or fear and committing an indictable offence while on bail.
Waight, who has been in custody since February 2019, was convicted and sentenced to 15 years and four months in prison with a non-parole period of 11 years.
The court heard Waight and his female victim had spent a night drinking at a Ballarat venue in 2019 before going back to a Delacombe house around 2am.
It was there that Waight became “angry” and started to verbally abuse the woman before pushing her onto the bedroom floor, getting on top of her, using his hands to strangle her and spitting in her face.
The woman struggled to free herself and repeatedly asked Waight to stop.
He punched her in the head and face before grabbing a pedestal fan and striking her with it with such force that the fan broke.
As a result of the assault, the victim sustained injuries to her head, mouth and face.
The court heard the “dazed” and “disorientated” woman recalled “blacking out” as she heard Waight boiling a kettle in the kitchen so he could pour the boiling water over her.
She tried to escape but he grabbed a knife as she fumbled with the lock on the door.
“I’m going to slit your throat”, he told her before he scraped the blade across her neck.
Waight then tackled the terrified woman to the floor where he choked her so hard she lost consciousness and control of her bladder and bowels.
He then dragged her into a cold shower by her hair and strangled her again.
The woman feared for her life as she was raped twice in the following hours.
Judge David Sexton said Waight, who had a prior criminal history, had an “ongoing denial of responsibility” that meant the victim was “forced to relive her humiliating ordeal” when the matter went to trial.
“The community needs protection from you,” he said of Waight, who had previously been convicted of rape.
