A Melton South garbage truck driver has died in hospital following a crash with another rubbish truck on a rural road near Ballarat.

A 69-year-old Melton South garbage truck driver has died in hospital following a crash with another rubbish truck at Mount Wallace.

Emergency services were called to Mt Wallace-Ballarat Road following reports two garbage trucks crashed about 5.30am on Anzac Day.

Victoria Police said the driver of the rear truck was cut from the vehicle and taken to hospital in a critical condition.

He later died in hospital on Wednesday April 27.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident and will prepare a report for the coroner.

There have been 83 lives have been lost on Victorian roads this year, compared to 73 last year.
