Heartbroken friends and family have farewelled a bubbly young Ballarat hairdresser whose life was cut tragically short in a horror car crash late last month.
Soon-to-be salon manager Alexandra Leigh Baines Weeks was just 24 years old when she was killed in a two-vehicle collision at Bunkers Hill on June 27.
She had just embarked on an exciting new chapter in life: moving in to her own place with boyfriend Jai, becoming proud owner of pet dog Ace, and going from strength to strength in her dream job at The Stag.
The only child of parents Norelle Baines and Shaun Weeks, Alex had grown from a “sassy” young girl to a “beautiful, unique, strong” young woman who was enormously admired by all who knew her.
Photos and videos displayed at her funeral service on Friday showed the cheeky, fun-loving spirit many knew her for – from her primary school years at Melton South and Quambatook, to high school at Staughton College, to the beginning of her adult life in Ballarat.
Songs ‘Tough Lover’ by Christina Aguilera and ‘Mother’ by In The Moment gave a powerful insight into her determination in life and loyalty to those she loved.
Mum Norelle described Alex as her best friend and the “light of (her) life”.
“You cared for me always and nothing will ever be able to replace you,” she said.
“Our memories are endless – we did everything together – your strength, your love for me, your kind and funny nature, your calming spirit, your amazing smile.”
Stag Salon co-owner Amber Kammerer said Alex was “sunshine in human form” and so strong were her skills as an apprentice hairdresser, she was set to step up to the manager’s position in a few months’ time.
“She was so bloody talented,” Ms Kammerer said.
“Her potential was next level.”
Close friend Archie said Alex had a way of making everyone feel special.
“Don’t forget how much love she gave all of you – she had more than enough for everyone,” he said.
Lyrics from the song ‘Look For Me In Rainbows’ left mourners with a message of comfort:
“Time for me to leave you, I won’t say goodbye;
Look for me in rainbows, high up in the sky.
In the evening sunset, when all the world is through,
Just look for me and love me, and I’ll be close to you.”
