A Gordon man with a “propensity for firearms” and “ongoing sovereign citizen beliefs” was allegedly found with a manufactured gun, fireworks, and nearly 30 cannabis plants, a court has heard.
Diesel mechanic An Dinh Tran, 47, faced Ballarat Magistrates’ Court by video on Thursday and applied for bail.
The court heard police attended Mr Tran’s home in June and found him in a garage, allegedly with a firearm on a bench pointing towards the doorway.
On Wednesday, they searched his home and allegedly seized a manufactured “bolt action rifle”, ammunition, 29 cannabis plants, and commercial fireworks.
Mr Tran was taken to Melton police station, where police allegedly discovered a bag of methylamphetamine in his pocket.
He was charged with possessing a trafficable quantity of firearms, manufacturing a category A longarm, possessing a firearm as a prohibited person, cultivating a narcotic plant, possessing methylamphetamine, possessing unsecured ammunition, and possessing a commercial explosive firework.
At court, Mr Tran suggested the “so-called rifle” might have been a toy.
He was denied bail and will return to court July 16.
A restraining order was issued by the County Court on June 18 preventing Mr Tran from disposing of his Gordon property.
