Homicide detectives have charged a man over the alleged murder of Albury father-of-four Duwayne Johnson.
Police charged Benjamin Stiler, 25, with one count of murder over the fatal shooting of Mr Johnson on January 16 after they launched a public appeal to find him.
Investigators were called to a Woodland Street home about 3am where they found the victim fatally injured on the street.
Stiler was arrested at an Ascot Vale service station at the corner of Epsom and Maribyrnong roads about 9pm on Friday.
He faced court via video link wearing a black T-shirt, grey shorts and no face mask.
Defence barrister Sally Wilson told the court Mr Stiler had custody management issues.
“There are concerns for my client’s safety,” Ms Wilson said.
“He has been diagnosed with PTSD, complex trauma and anxiety. He is prescribed medication for his anxiety although he cannot recall (the name of) it.”
Ms Wilson requested Stiler be seen by a nurse while in custody.
Stiler paced the room while waiting for his hearing to start and at one point placed his head in his hands.
Earlier this week police warned Stiler was suspected to be armed, was considered dangerous, and urged the public not to approach him.
The murder charge follows pleas from Mr Johnson’s family for anyone involved in his death to hand themselves in.
Mr Johnson’s older brother, Clancy Charles, said his family would “never get over” his younger brother’s death.
“Just come forward with information, and whoever did it, just hand yourself in,” he said.
He said his brother’s death had caused “a lot of pain” among his extended family and friends.
“We’d drive ourselves mad thinking about how, or what happened,” he said.
Mr Johnson was allegedly shot at close range, with a shotgun, before being run over in the street.
Mr Johnson has extended family in Albury-Wodonga and Griffith, NSW.
The doting young dad leaves behind four children, the youngest of whom is just four months old.
Mr Stiler was remanded in custody and made no application for bail.
He will next face court on January 25 for a filing hearing at the Wodonga Magistrates’ court.
The investigation is ongoing.
