An Albury drug user has ended his 12-year addiction to meth after amputating a finger during a drug induced psychosis.
Jacob John Schliebs faced Albury Local Court yesterday after being caught with stolen power tools and a motor vehicle in his custody, and driving with an meth amphetamines in his system.

On June 21, 2019, Schliebs’ white Triton, in which he was a passenger, was pulled over for an RBT on Sanders St in Lavington.
Police found a Milwaukee powerdrill, circular saw, and three Milwaukee batteries in the back of the vehicle which had been reported stolen.

The 34-year-old father said he got the power tools from a friend.
When police asked Schliebs if he believed the tools were stolen he said:

“Of course they could be.”
When police asked him why he thought they could be stolen Schliebs said his friend wasn’t a carpenter.

In Glenroy on July 23, 2019, police pulled over a while Holden Commodore Utility on Logan Rd in North Albury.
The vehicle was displaying stolen plates which had expired earlier that year.
Police discovered the 2007 Commodore was reported stolen in May 2019, and had been rebirthed.

The driver, Schliebs, said he had purchased the vehicle two weeks before.

Police performed a drunk and alcohol test on Schliebs who returned a positive result for meth amphetamines.

Schliebs told police he had smoked meth the night before at a mate’s house, and does so once or twice a month.

Defence solicitor Dominic Holles said Schliebs had abstained from drugs and had last used in March this year.

“He has been abstinent from drugs after a 12 year addiction to meth amphetamine,” Mr Holles said.

“After he amputated his own finger with a tomahawk due to a drug induced psychosis, he sought help.”
Mr Holles said Schliebs had moved back in with his parents, and that his mother, who was supporting Schliebs in court, had seen a huge change in him.
“He’s effectively done his rehabilitation himself,” he said.

Magistrate Richard Funston said he was impressed by Schliebs’ efforts to turn his life around.

“You’re on two goods in custody matters, they’re serious matters and there’s real dishonesty attach to that,” Magistrate Funston said.

“But they happened a fair while ago and you’ve cleaned your act up since then.

“The community is much better off if you’re not using.”

For the two goods in custody charges Magistrate Funston sentenced Schliebs to an eight month community corrections order with the condition that he abstains from drugs.

For driving with an illicit drug in his system Schliebs was given a $500 fine.
