David Thomas Corken: Albury man sexually touched young girl multiple times

An Albury judge said a man who sexually touched a six-year-old girl “abused the trust” of the child.

A 62-year-old Albury man who sexually touched a girl, which began when she was just six years old, is facing three years in prison.

David Thomas Corken faced Albury District Court on Tuesday after pleading guilty to two counts of sexually touching a child under 10.

The court heard Corken had touched his victim’s vagina over a period of two or three years, beginning when the victim was just six years old.

The first instance happened sometime between December 27, 2018 and December 26, 2019.
The court heard Corken reached into the girl’s underwear and rubbed her genitals.

On a later occasion, after rubbing her genitals he asked the victim if she would like to play with some toys, and she said yes.

The victim’s mother then inspected the girl’s genitals and noticed they were red.

In a victim impact statement written by the mother, she said her daughter now woke up every night with nightmares.

Judge Sean Grant said he would take into account the age discrepancy, the skin-to-skin contact, and the fact that the touching was only for short periods of time.

“There was no force but there was an abuse of trust,” Judge Grant said.

The court heard Corken had apologised to his victim and her family.

“I accept the offender is genuinely remorseful for his actions,” Judge Grant said.

“The offender has a long work history and I accept he has some prospects for rehabilitation.”

Judge Grant sentenced Corken to three years imprisonment backdated to April 22, 2020, with a non-parole period of two years.

Corken will be eligible for parole on April 21, 2022.

“The courts have long treated sexual offences against children as being of the utmost seriousness,” Judge Grant said.
