Two brothers in their 40s made no application for bail after allegedly being busted with a truckload of ice and cocaine on the Hume Highway.
The Numurkah pair faced Wangaratta Local Court today after being charged with trafficking a commercial quantity of methyl amphetamine and trafficking a commercial quantity of cocaine just before 6.30pm on Tuesday, March 23.
Police will allege officers from the Wangaratta Highway Patrol stopped a truck during a routine traffic stop on the Hume Highway.
Corey O’Brien, who was the truck driver, allegedly tested positive for drugs after undertaking a roadside test.
Officers searched the vehicle and allegedly uncovered a large amount of illicit drugs, which will undergo forensic testing.
Corey O’Brien’s defence solicitor said he would not make an application for bail today, but would before July 1.
Michael O’Brien’s defence solicitor Shana McDonald said she would also make a bail application for her client at a later date.
“It’s his first time in custody,” Ms McDonald said.
“He has a history of depression which he is not medicated for, and is reporting high levels of anxiety since being taken into custody.
“I submit that a mental health assessment is required.
“He is also a smoker and therefore will be suffering withdrawals from nicotine.”
The pair will appear back in Wangaratta Local Court on July 1.
