Beechworth Wanderers’ Cam Fendyk takes six wickets in six balls

Beechworth cricketer Cam Fendyk says he had bowled about 20 overs in the last five years and was “getting spanked” in his first four on Saturday. Here’s how he changed all that in six balls.

Six balls, six wickets: Cam Fendyk.
Six balls, six wickets: Cam Fendyk.

Cam Fendyk reckons his opponents were unlucky.

“I feel pretty bad for them, because I don’t think I’ve ever bowled six balls on the stumps in my life!’’ the Beechworth Wanderers cricketer said with a laugh on Monday morning.

On Saturday Fendyk, 21, claimed six wickets with six deliveries in an A reserve match in the Wangaratta and District Cricket Association.

He finished with 7-20 off eight overs against Benalla Bushrangers.

Fendyk nabbed four wickets with the last four balls of his fifth over and two more with the first two deliveries of his sixth over.

Every wicket was unassisted: he bowled the first five of his victims and had the last LBW as the Bushrangers crashed from 1-60 to be all out for 83.

Asked if it was his first hat-trick, Fendyk shot back: “Yeah. I don’t think I’ve ever got three wickets in a game before, to be honest. I’ve bowled about 20 overs in the last five years.’’

Fendyk usually bats in his club’s A grade team but filled in for Reserves.

“There were a lot of laughs going on. If you ask everyone at the club, I certainly wouldn’t be in the top 10 to get a hat-trick, let alone six,’’ he said.

“Everyone was laughing and carrying on. To be honest, I was getting spanked in the first four overs.’’

His older brother Austen was captain and stuck with him.

But if you heard a bang on Sunday, it might have been the sound of Fendyk falling back to earth after his six-in-six heroics. He played in A grade against Greta – and was bowled for a duck.

“I’m back to not liking cricket any more,’’ he said.

Fendyk, a salesman at Burda Industries – “We make front-end loaders for tractors,’’ he said – has played all his cricket at Beechworth Wanderers.
