A Melbourne man has faced court after he was allegedly caught trying to cross the Victorian-NSW border with 50kg of cannabis.

A Melbourne man has been remanded in custody after he was allegedly caught trying to cross the Victorian-NSW border with 50kg of cannabis on Monday night.

Ali Sadeghi-Iman, 28, did not appear at the Wodonga Magistrates Court on Tuesday but was represented by his lawyer.

He did not apply for bail.

Sadeghi-Iman was charged with possession and trafficking of a commercial quantity of cannabis and dealing with the proceeds of crime.

Police allege the Point Cook man was heading north on the Hume Highway, near Barnawartha, at 10.10pm on Monday night.

When he was stopped by Wodonga highway patrol members he allegedly told police he was heading for Sydney.

The Herald Sunhas been told he could not produce a travel permit and the officers decided to search his Mitsubishi Pajero when 50kg of cannabis was allegedly uncovered.

Sadeghi-Iman was remanded in custody for a committal mention on November 11.
