Albury North crime: armed robbery: Taxi driver threatened with screw driver, robbed

A Stanley knife has allegedly been pulled on an taxi driver in Albury in an early morning armed robbery.

An Albury taxi driver was allegedly robbed by a man wielding a screw driver during an early morning pick up in Albury North.

The driver responded to a fare on Mate St at about 5.45am on April 8 where he picked up a 20-year-old man.

As the man exited the taxi on Plover St he allegedly produced a screwdriver and demanded cash from the driver.

The taxi driver complied, and the man left the taxi with cash, a mobile phone and EFTPOS machine.

A short time later, police were notified of a man breaking into a home on Calimo St, North Albury.

Police attended the home and established a crime scene.

During a search of the home, police located the 20-year-old man hiding in a cupboard.

“A robbery took place where a phone, wallet and some other items were taken,” Detective Chief Inspector Mick Stoltenberg said.

“Police responded straight away, the victim was spoken to, and more importantly he’s safe.

“With some community assistance and good work by the first responding police we’ve been able to locate a young male who is now in custody.”

The man has been charged with possess offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence, robbery while armed with an offensive weapon, and trespass.

He will appear at Albury Local Court today.
