*SUNDAY HERALD SUN* Sonia Paua was born in a small village in PNG. She developed chronic osteomyelitis when she was around 7 years old. Osteomyelitis is a rare condition which causes the bones to degrade and shorten. Her family noticed the swelling and she had a fever.She was treated at Port Moresby General Hospital on several occasions but was left with a femur deformity and shortening of the limb. This has changed her life. It is painful to walk as well as embarrassing for her in public. Epworth HealthCare and Children First Foundation have worked to bring the teenager to Australia so that her leg can be lengthened as part of a complicated procedure. Picture: Mark Stewart

Kindness of strangers will see Sonia walking tall

With one leg longer than the other as the result of a childhood bone infection, 18-year-old Sonia Paua has hobbled kilometres to school for more than a decade. Now, the Papua New Guinean teen is heading to Melbourne to receive life-changing surgery.
